Week 10 – 5th to 11th March to 1984

Our thanks to John Baxter for the following:

“The picture of Freda Whittern in the Art Shop on Castle Street brought back fond memories.  Freda looked after the main part of the shop which she shared with her husband Ralph.  Ralph was the backroom boy who carried out all the framing – I still have some pictures that were framed by him but the pictures that were in the shop, but not for sale, were actually painted by Ralph.  Many of these were of local scenes.

At the time of writing [March 2018] Ralph and Freda are both still living in Trowbridge although sadly Freda is now in a home on Wingfield Road and Ralph has been gradually losing his sight over the years which is so sad when one remembers the vivid colours of all his paintings and the intricacy of his framing.

A lovely couple but then I can admit to some bias as for a few years I courted their daughter Hazel in the late 1960s and early 1970s.”
