Week 09 – 27th February to 4th March 1984

(A303) Elizabeth Shirley dance school Ballet class

(A304) Joy Bloomfield recalls – This is Hartford Street. My grandparents used to live there and Sid and I agree on the name. We both knew it well and it is still there but has been redeveloped as the relief road cuts through it now.

Philip Lucas writes – Photograph A304 – This is actually Harford Street, not Hartford Street, and I lived there for the first 18 years of my life at No29. The photograph is looking towards Ashton Street, and the building at the top left was Courtiers Builders & Undertakers, becoming the Driving Test Centre not long before we moved to Wyke Road.

(A296) Staff at the Wimpy bar.

I remember the Wimpy and was a Wimpy girl myself, my very first part time job when I was 12! Of the four staff pictured second from right is Joyce (A296).

I used to work all day Saturday and from 4.30-6pm after school on a Monday and earned 12.5p [two shillings and sixpence] per hour in about 1972/3. I can still make a knickerbocker glory, a banana split and an ice cream float and flip burgers with the best of them, using reconstituted dried onions of course. Yummy!
