(B498) First of a series of side view photographs of St James’ the parish church of Trowbridge.  And the grave of a young lad who died protesting for workers’ rights. what was his name?

B498 – the lad was Thomas Helliker, who worked in a Semington woollen mill and who was hanged in Salisbury on his 19th birthday in 1802 for an alleged uprising against the introduction of mechanisation despite an alibi being provided.  His supporters brought his body across Salisbury Plain back to Trowbridge for burial. The tomb over his grave was erected in 1876 to commemorate what was almost certainly a miscarriage of justice. [John Baxter]
